Vibing with Abby Dorsey

Abby Dorsey is officially living her best life.

With a cheerful new single that encourages listeners to seize the day and “give less f#cks,” the San Diego based songwriter is launching into a new musical chapter with a renewed sense of excitement and confidence.

But things weren’t always so rosy. Dorsey began working on “Best Life” on the heels of the pandemic, during a chapter of intense personal change and self-discovery.

“I was going through a divorce, navigating some complex family issues, and literally rebuilding my life and identity. I wrote ‘Best Life’ as a way of reminding myself to follow my heart, and to care less about what other people think.”

Dorsey workshopped early versions of “Best Life” at Writer’s Round, San Diego’s weekly open mic for songwriters. She credits the event’s supportive atmosphere with giving her the courage to start playing her ukulele live–something she’d never done in past musical projects as a rapper and lyricist.

“In my previous band, I was all about hyping the crowd and being lyrically quick and clever. It was more like playing a role on stage. In this chapter, I’m playing an instrument, I’m singing. I’ve had to learn how to slow down, soften my voice, and be more vulnerable. It’s exciting and terrifying at the same time.”

The result–”Best Life”–is a catchy, laid-back tune that oozes with vibes of self-love and positivity.

Of course, Dorsey is no stranger to upbeat anthems with positive messages. As a frequent collaborator of Grammy Award winning troubadour, Jason Mraz, Dorsey has leant her vocals to the background of Mraz’s megahit, “I’m Yours,” as well as served as a co-writer on some of his songs, most notably “I Feel Like Dancing” (2023), and “You Do You” (2020). On “Best Life,” Mraz returns the favor by providing musical accompaniment, as well as delivering the song’s signature whistle.

Mraz isn’t the only San Diego personality lending his talents to “Best Life.” The track was produced, recorded, and engineered by hometown hero Jeff Berkley (Studio West Satellite), and features the musical stylings of Jake Najor on drums, and Jason Littlefield on electric bass. Some of Dorsey’s close friends and collaborators join for the song’s choral finish.

“My community really showed up for me, and for that, I am grateful,” muses Dorsey. “I hope the song continues to connect with people, and that it inspires them to live their best lives–whatever that means to them.”
